CRONUS Prototype 2

If you haven’t already read about the PROTOTYPE 1 from Germany’s Cronus Watch Manufacture this incredible-looking dive watch is the Prototype 2, hand-crafted in Germany, it was developed using a refined version of Cronus’s patented crown closing-system.

It would be fair to say that like its predecessor, the Prototype 2 is largely characterized by this specialized crown-locking device.

It would also be fair to mention that Cronus are not the first to explore ways of securing the crown (a dive watch’s most vulnerable point) – however like other divers with such crown-locking devices they have gone that extra mile in terms of engineering - so this is where we’ll start.

The Prototype 1’s crown closure was further developed and optimized. After extensive testing, the idea to fit it with a visual warning system (a red security ring) which is controlled axially by a spring so as to alert the wearer when the crown was unsecured came about.

In addition, some corresponding text has also been added onto the watch’s dial (control before dive). This gives the watch even more of a toolish look - if that were possible.

As part of the development, the crown closure was further optimized and decoupled from the housing. As a result, the relief of the elevator crown has been achieved without sacrificing safety.

The housing is made according to Cronus’s 3D technical drawings in a Glashütte watchmaking facility. The watch is then hand-assembled in a strictly limited small series in their Munich watch workshop.

Further spec. includes: a 316L, Stainless steel 1.4435a case measuring 45mm x 10mm x 57.7mm (lug-lug) x 26m with a 3.5mm AR-treated domed Sapphire crystal, 300 meters of water-resistance, a Swiss automatic caliber ETA 2824-2.

Each Prototype 2 housing has a serial number. You get a completely lovingly hand built and original piece “made in Germany.

The current price is 2400€- for the steel version, the PVD version is €2500€,- available via homepage or chrono24. I don't know about you but this exactly the kind of watch that speaks to me - just wish all that bulk had lead to a tad more water-resistance.
